I just wanted to post a quick update on the saga of Palm Bay City Council Seat 5 and where we stand as of 2/28/23.
To get started, let's look at what the city has posted on its website's elections page.
A critical piece of information is the deadline to submit applications is Wednesday, March 29th, by 5:00 P.M. Another tidbit is the application will be posted shortly along with a Residency Affidavit.
I don't see anything regarding a background check, but I could have sworn that the council voted 3-1 to include a background check with the application. So I guess we will see when the application is posted to the website if a background check is required.
Once the deadline ends, the city council will rank the applications. As the website states
The individuals will be ranked by each councilmember and the individual receiving the lowest number will be appointed by City Council.
I, for one, will be interested in how many applicants the city will receive for this position. When I attended the city council meeting where all city council members asked for Peter Filiberto to resign, I saw many past city council candidates in attendance. You could sense many people were waiting for this opportunity to arise after they heard about Filiberto's incident.
I will tell you that I will be one of those who fill out an application. Will you be one as well?
edit** -- City Council Vacancy Application Packet -- is now available.
