With Manny Diaz resigning, or as he says retiring, as FDP Chair I got to wondering if this might possibly be a step in the right direction for the FDP.
Of course we really won’t know for a few years if Diaz stepping down was a plus for the FDP and its local DEC’s. I’m not sure how I feel about Diaz stepping down, but I do tend to agree with this statement he made...
“Floridians overwhelmingly adopted constitutional amendments that reflect our values,” Diaz wrote. “However, we cannot win elections if we continue to rely on voter registration to drive turnout, build field operations only around elections, and expect to get our vote out without engaging voters where they live; listening to them and earning their trust.”
With that being said, it seems that the 20+ years Republicans have been in charge in Florida would have been ample time for FDP to come up with a plan to organize voter trust and turnout. Instead, at least in recent years, the party and local DEC’s tend to rely on current talking points and issues in hopes that this will entice people to vote.
It will be interesting to see if this will lead to any changes here with our local Brevard County Democratic Executive Committee.
